Who We Are

Firm History

DeStigter Architecture LLC has been a consistent presence in the West Michigan design community for more than three decades. The practice was originally founded in 1992 as a sole proprietorship by architect Kim DeStigter, establishing a reputation for thoughtful design and reliable project delivery. Shortly after, the firm expanded its leadership through a partnership with Grace Smith, operating as DeStigter/Smith Architects broadening its portfolio and client base.

From 2008 through 2021, the firm continued its growth and professional reach under the name DeStigter Architecture & Planning, reflecting its broader involvement in planning-focused and community-oriented work. In 2022, the practice entered its current phase with the formation of DeStigter Architecture LLC, led by partners Kim DeStigter and Sheila Mellen.

Throughout its evolution, the firm has maintained a strong specialization in housing, including single-family homes, multifamily communities, and mixed-use residential developments. This focus has enabled DeStigter Architecture to cultivate deep expertise in residential design, site planning, building systems, and the regulatory complexities that shape housing projects.

Today, DeStigter Architecture LLC continues its legacy of responsible design, client-focused service, and a commitment to advancing high-quality housing in the region.

Design Philosophy & Approach

At DeStigter Architecture, we believe that inquiry is the foundation of design. Every project begins with asking the right questions about context, purpose, constraints, opportunities, and the lived experience of the people who will inhabit the space. This disciplined curiosity drives our process and ensures that each design decision is intentional, informed, and aligned with our clients’ goals.

Our approach is inherently responsive. We listen carefully, interpret thoughtfully, and shape solutions that evolve from genuine understanding. Whether we are designing a single-family home, a multifamily community, or a mixed-use development, we respond to the nuances of site, program, budget, and community impact. Rather than imposing predetermined forms, we allow design to emerge from the specific conditions and aspirations of each project.

Through inquiry and responsiveness, we create architecture that is functional, enduring, and deeply connected to the people and places it serves.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create thoughtful, well-crafted architecture rooted in inquiry and shaped through responsive collaboration. We believe the best design solutions emerge from careful listening, purposeful questioning, and a deep understanding of the people and places each project serves. By engaging closely with our clients and studying the unique conditions of every site, we develop architecture that is both practical and meaningful.

Our work is grounded in technical rigor and a commitment to quality. We approach each project with attention to detail, clear organization, and a focus on long-term performance. The result is architecture that is functional, durable, and responsive to its context.

With particular expertise in housing and mixed-use environments, we are dedicated to creating buildings that support livability and contribute positively to their surroundings. Our goal is to deliver projects that strengthen neighborhoods, meet the evolving needs of communities, and stand the test of time.
